Interview

Welches sind Deine musikalischen Vorbilder und wie haben sie Dich beeinflusst?

My first musical role model was my High School bass teacher – Richard. I remember that for the first five years of my musical education – I just wanted to sound like him! He introduced me to Jaco Pastorius and from there I began listening to a lot of funk, soul and Jazz music. Since then, I was totally hooked on the idea of playing music for a living. I went and studied Jazz at The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and had lessons from some of my heroes from the U.K. Jazz scene. In this time, I was mostly playing electric bass but gradually began to become more interested in Double Bass, which lead me to the Jazzcampus in Basel to study with one of my all time favourite musicians – Larry Grenadier. I’m very happy to say that I have had, and continue to have direct inspiration from my Role Models!

Was ist Dein absolutes Spezialgebiet?

Although flexibility and diversity of the music I play and listen to is very important to me, I specialise in Jazz. For me, Jazz is one of the most rewarding genres to play and I love the freedom and musical expressiveness that is such an important part of the music. I also find that Jazz is a great way to learn about all music, about theory, technique and musicality and it enhances the way that I experience and listen to all music.

Was hast Du sonst noch für Talente / Know-How im Bereich Musik?

Aside from being a bass player and educator, I am also a composer either collaborating or leading my own projects. In the past I have written for traditional jazz Big Band, Afro Cuban Jazz-Orchestras and I am currently writing a new suite of music for Octet. I compose mostly with piano and have sufficient ability to accompany my students on piano when necessary!

Was erwartet mich bei Dir im Unterricht?

I feel that one of my main strengths as a teacher is being able to draw on my real-world experience as an active and practicing musician in a variety of genres. I have taught and continue to teach students of all ages and all abilities from beginner-level, right up to fellow professionals and I always strive to tailor my lessons to the individual. Many of my students, especially mature students, have specific goals in mind when they come to learn; in these cases, we come up with a syllabus together. Every lesson is planned and specifically tailored to them, and work is set at whatever pace suits best. For students who are interested in taking exams, I often recommend the Rockschool exam board (Grades 1-8) and I’m proud to have a 100% pass rate with all my students achieving a Merit or Distinction on their exam.

With my students, I am keen to pass on all that I have learned and am able to cater lessons to the student’s personal musical tastes, delivering useful information in whatever scenarios and genres they enjoy the most. Having started online lessons in March 2020, I now have over three years’ experience in online teaching and have adapted my methods and lesson materials to make the most out virtual lessons. As a result, I’m very honoured to be able to teach students from all corners of the globe!

Unterrichtest Du auch Kinder und wie gehst Du bei ihnen vor?

I have experience teaching from ages 5-65 through my own private lessons, as part of Musicate (an educational programme in which I delivered music workshops to primary aged children (5-11 years old) all over Gloucestershire) as well as having been the visiting bass guitar and double bass tutor at the renowned Warwick Independent School for over two years teaching children between 7 and 16 years old.

I approach each student completely depending on their interests in Music and I try to tailor every lesson to the individual. With Children I often focus on sharing a long lasting and sustainable love for music and we work a lot with building a strong foundation with the instrument that is non-genre specific, so that they are able to specialise in whatever takes their interest as they grow musically!

In welchem Alter hast Du Bass spielen gelernt und wie bist Du vorgegangen?

I began my own musical studies from a young age, studying guitar at school and classical piano with a local teacher. At the age of thirteen, I switched to playing bass and began performing rock, pop, and folk music in the local area until I decided to further my studies by attending Leeds College of Music (2013-2015) at age of sixteen. I then went on to study at The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (2015-2019), where I studied on the jazz course and graduated with a first-class degree, in addition to being awarded the jazz prize for my cohort. After several years of freelancing in Yorkshire and the Midlands, I am now completing a master’s degree in jazz performance and composition at the Jazzcampus in Basel, Switzerland.

Was würdest Du als Anfänger heute anders machen?

As a beginner today I would take regular lessons with one teacher in order to get an input from somebody who knows me well musically, but I would also take every opportunity to take one off lessons with other musicians, even if they don’t play the same instrument! Aside from this, the most important thing is to play for real – with other musicians! If I was a beginner again today, I would play in as many different ensembles/bands as possible as there is no substitute for the experience you gain from playing music live with other musicians.

Was waren die Höhepunkte Deiner musikalischen Laufbahn?

Recent highlights include:

A 3-week tour of Europe with «The Retrosettes» as the support act for Simply Red at Stadiums in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The following year, we toured again as the support act for Lindsey Stirling’s European tour, which gave me valuable insight into the music industry and the role of a touring pop and rock bass player.

Joining Canadian blues guitarist – Cliff Stevens, for his 2021 «Better Days» Album tour. Since being released it has reached #3 on the Top 50 Canada Album Chart and the track ‹True Love› reached #1 on the Top 50 Canada Song Chart.

In 2022, I performed at the Em Bebbi Sy Jazz festival with Alex Ligertwood (Santana, Jeff Beck) celebrating the music of Santana in Basel, Switzerland.

In the autumn of 2022, I took part in the DKSJ Swiss Jazz All Star’s tour of Switzerland featuring the music of Ingrid Laubrock and other leading female contemporary music composers performing in Basel, Lausanne, Bern, Luzern and Zurich.

Was möchtest Du als Musiker / Lehrperson noch alles erreichen?

As a musician I would love to tour more with my own projects and collaborate more with the other jazz musicians on the European and International scene. I would like to maintain the diversity of music in my career and continue to play modern pop and rock music with like minded-musicians. Most of all I want to continue to study and improve myself!

Warum soll ich bei Dir Unterricht nehmen?

Lessons with me are enjoyable, relaxed and at the student’s own pace. If you want lessons from a musician who is currently working in the modern music industry and classes that are completely tailored to your own interests and not a ‹one size fits all› approach, then I believe you will be happy with my approach! I look forward to hearing from you.
